Media's Rhetoric
As good instigators and gossip- providers, the associated press turned this situation into a media frenzy. The controversial connection between Kate del Castillo, Sean Penn and El Chapo -along with government criticisms- became the main course to feed a gossip-craved multitude. The media, heavily controlled by the [corrupt] Mexican government, essentially criticized Kate del Castillo until they could no more. The press depicted her as the government wanted her to be seen-- a sexualized actress so thirsty for fame, money and power that she developed a [romantic] relationship with the biggest national drug lord. The media went as far as accusing her of being pregnant with his baby. Various news outlets throughout many latin-american and Spanish countries claimed that she had had sexual intercourse with him and had 'assured' she was pregnant, with El Chapo as the father. The clips with these allegations can be found in the third episode of her docuseries (minute 40) and in some select articles online, though most of the original news broadcasts with those allegations have since been deleted.
As effective rhetors, the associated press/ media outlets were the ones who initially created the narrative of this particular tale and convinced their audience. They were the ones feeding the public with ~biased and filtered~ information. They (and the government) manipulated the information that was being published and shown to the public in a way that would portray Kate del Castillo as a public enemy who had developed an [illicit] alliance with El Chapo. Alterations of the occurrences went as far as the media filtering the text messages being shown between del Castillo and Sean Penn in a way that made her seem as though she had been aware of the Rolling Stone interview and that she'd been maintaining a romantic entanglement with Joaquín, El Chapo, Guzmán.
As part of the media's strategy to fuel the already existent scandal, they utilized Sean Penn's statements to instigate more problems between both the actress and actor. They created their own rumors and published quotes such as that by Mark Fabiani, Penn's spokesman, who made a statement to PEOPLE magazine on behalf of Penn criticizing Kate del Castillo, her intentions, and her documentary. He stated, "This is not about one person’s safety. These producers are propagating false and reckless fabrications for their profit. This is nothing but a cheap, National Enquirer-esque tale spun by a delusional person whose hunger for fame is both tawdry and transparent", which the associated press used to their advantage to further their rhetoric. Through such examples, they also used Aristotle' appeals in order to gain trust and support from the multitude.
