Kate's Panopticon

Tied in with the claims on del Castillo's behalf that she was being followed by helicopters and DEA agents comes Kate's panopticon and paranoia. Following her trip to El Chapo's home, the actress claimed to feel "scared" to be alone in her LA house and took steps to install a security plan, including cameras. She felt watched and not safe in her own home; that sense of being constantly looked at evidently relates to Foucault's panopticism.

In his third part, which focuses on discipline and centers around (pun intended) panopticism, Michel Foucault discusses the Panopticon (originally by Bentham) and how it is a [social] structure intended to make its target feel constantly observed, even when they might not be. It aims "to induce in the inmate a state of conscious and permanent visibility that assures the automatic functioning of power" (Foucault).  Essentially, this sort of surveillance functions as a sort of discourse since it can very directly affect how you act-- you are being watched and therefore will act differently since having your actions observed by others makes them more permanent or 'real'. This becomes even more valid when we write things down (which is exactly what Kate del Castillo did when she published her original Tweet). Writing things down can become even more powerful since written/ published statements can very easily be used in favor of or against you (the latter happened in this case).

Now in this scenario, the Panopticon that Foucault discusses in his article can be linked and adapted to Kate del Castillo's particular situation. She sent out her Tweet and obviously received very negative feedback from most of the audience. Though she did have a big group that did applaud her courage and her disposition to denounce the Mexican government, even that group was still fueling the speculations and adding more comments to the scandal. After months [and even years] of disputes and continuous tabloid scandals, Kate reached the point where she was scared to go back to her native country. She felt watched and paranoid, which becomes her Panopticon.

Due to the pressing speculation and attacks and accusations from the Mexican government-- mostly vocalized through the media-- Kate del Castillo ended up feeling paranoid and watched by those who came in contact with her. She was even afraid of returning to her home country out of fear that they [the government] would do something to her, 'something' that went past accusations of illegal misconduct. In one of her interviews in the documentary, she claimed that if anything were to ever happen to her, it would be because of the Mexican government and not due to the Mexican Cartel-- again, she makes a public criticism against her [corrupt and violent] government.

In relation to Foucault's article, the Mexican administration and even the associated press becomes her Panopticon and Kate one of the prisoners. She knows that the guard is there, or could be there but does not know quite when they are watching. She constantly lives in fear and with the paranoia of being watched or of making a wrong move that can cause her to wind up dead. This can either be her physically doing something or even making another Tweet (written which makes it more permanent). The government and associated press represents the powerful central Panopticon given that they are the ones who have the most control and are 'watching'. Since they are the government after all, they have the flexibility to enforce the 'law' and to do as they wish. Even more threatening for Kate, it is common knowledge that the Mexican government in particular, is very corrupt. This means that they will play fairly but will more than likely play dirty as well. In her docuseries, Kate expresses that "this camera is my only protection" and that "if anything happens to me, it will be because of the Mexican government, not the cartel." The associated press also can destroy her but on another level. They will criticize her so much that her reputation will go down the drain and through precisely chosen rhetoric, they [social media and press] will paint her to be in the wrong.
